Windows 10 Deadline: Why Schools Must Act Now | EIS

Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on 14th October 2025 – a critical moment for education establishments still using devices with Windows 10 installed.

After this date, those devices will no longer receive security updates, bug fixes, or technical support from Microsoft, leaving them potentially vulnerable and harder to manage.

For schools, this isn’t just a routine technical change. It’s a timely opportunity to make informed decisions, avoid disruption, and strengthen your digital environment for the long term.

Facing the Deadline

By 2025, many schools will find that around half their existing devices may not meet Windows 11’s minimum requirements. These older machines could become harder to manage, slower to respond, and crucially, more vulnerable to threats.

Microsoft is offering paid extended support for Windows 10 for up to three years, however it’s unclear how long device and application vendors will continue to support Windows 10 during that period – making temporary workaround, not a long-term fix.

By acting now, schools can make better choices, spread out costs, and avoid rushed decisions down the line.

It's Not Just a Design Update

Microsoft’s move to Windows 11 isn’t about flashier design – it’s about keeping users and their data safe.

The updated security features require newer hardware and deliver protections that Windows 10 simply wasn’t built to handle.

What's New in Windows 11

Windows 11 includes key features that help protect your school and support daily use:

  • Stronger built-in security with TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, and memory integrity
  • Smart App Control and AI-driven Defender for real-time threat protection
  • Faster, safer login using Windows Hello (face and fingerprint recognition)
  • Improved performance and battery life on modern devices

These aren’t just nice-to-haves – they help reduce risk and improve experience for staff and students alike.
